As a Woman, as a Mother, as a Physician, and now as a Politician…. What I’m ready to contribute for my Country.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Georgina Wilcock

Georgina Wilcock is a medical doctor with specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She emigrated from Zimbabwe in 1989 later obtained full Canadian citizenship. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Zimbabwe in 1986, coming first in her class. On completion of her degree, she worked as a physician for two years in Harare.
Once in Canada she continued her specialty studies at the University of Toronto .

Georgina is currently a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and works full time at the Scarborough Hospital . For the last 10 years she has also taken on administrative duties as the chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has completed a number of courses in medical leadership, and plays an ongoing role as an educator to family practice residents. Georgina has been a champion for patient safety initiatives through the MOREob program of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada

As a physician who has practiced for many years, I have seen multiple instances where scientific evidence has been presented conclusively and led to changes in practice. Therefore when I move into the political arena I find it shocking how politicians chose to ignore or worse still hide scientific evidence so that they can carry on with business as usual. In 2003 I worked through SARS, infact my hospital was at the very epicenter. If we as physicians had taken the political approach we would have denied its existence, tried to hide its effects and preached dire warnings about possible economic fallout. Gladly we did not, instead we listened to science and managed to curtail a potential epidemic.

When it comes to climate change we need to stop with the standard political responses and take a clinical approach. We need to accept the facts and let the scientist help us deal with what has the potential to be more devastating than a pandemic.

I am not a political person, nor do I have anything personal to gain from stepping into politics. No I stand here before you because as a mother and a person with some scientific training; I have done my reading and I am scared. Climate change is real and we have a limited time in which to act. And act we must for the sake of ourselves and our children.

Georgina lives in the riding of Don Valley West with her husband of 24 years, two teenagers, a West Highland terrier and a cat.
