Why Buy Organic Foods ?

Is it a fad, is it fiction, or is it the way of our future ?
Sometimes as an organic farmer, we honestly feel like we have just reinvented the wheel. Our fore fathers used the very same methods of farming, before the era of factory farming became popular. It would seem that many changes have been made with an economic concern rather than a health concern.

Many farmers are turning back to an organic approach to farming because of the high imput costs, or chemical fertilizers. Every year the land/soil gets weaker and produces less without the chemical fertilizers to compensate for continually robbing the land of its natural nutrients. We practise crop rotation annually, companion planting and natural organic fertilizers, depending on the crop. Wind breaks are helpful to prevent soil erosion.

Conventionally grown food products, or factory farmed products from a nutritional stand point are nutritionally void. A nutritional Deficit. This would be a politically correct statement. The conventional grocery items look absolutely wonderful on the store shelf, large in size, no blemishes, occassionally waxed for appearance. As the automatic sprayers mist them every 15 minutes in the grocery stores with chemical preservatives, this product will visably outlast any organic product. Not to mention how many chemicals have been sprayed on the product while is was growing. Anything imported, we must consider the fumigation and anti rippening process the product goes through before shipping.

Getting back to my point of products being nutritionally void, it takes 6 conventionally grown carrots to make the equivilent of 1 organic carrot, nutritionally speaking. This leads into an economic discussion, many people will say they cannot afford to buy organic foods. But will spend hundreds of dollars on vitamin supplements, with no regard of the cost.

As a nutritionist and organic farmer, I educate my clients on the importance of supportting the local organic farmer. As well as supporting their health and environment. Consumers who buy non organic foods, have no control over the quality of food they are purchasing, eg genetically modified foods. The long term health effect to be determined.!

I give guidance on how to integrate into an organic lifestye economically. An organic lifestyle is so much more than the foods we eat, but the chemical soaps we use in our homes. The quality of water we drink, and the quality of air we breath.

My goal is to educate people on a healthy lifestyle before they have cause to consult me on a degenerative issue. Prevention is the key to qualitly life. Genetically our children and our environment will be eternally grateful, for the decisions we make today.

In Good Health,

Sandy Morden-Young R.N.C.
